“People go to the best art museums in the United States not just for special exhibitions but also to see their permanent collections. “That’s what distinguishes a great museum,” [Chairman Charles Schwab] said. “It’s also unquestionably the case that as people think about future homes for their collections, if you can’t present them in good-quality exhibition spaces, your chance of receiving gifts diminishes substantially. … Nobody wants to see their works live in the basement.”
